NexGen Helios™ NL020SD 20 W LED Driver Represents a Significant Shift in Power Electronics Design

The NexGen Helios™ NL020SD 20 W LED Driver represents a significant shift in power electronics design, primarily due to its departure from conventional silicon (Si) or lateral Gallium Nitride (GaN-on-Si) architectures.

NexGen Vertical GaN® Technology

Traditional GaN devices are lateral, meaning current flows across the surface of the chip. This structure requires increasingly large surface areas to handle higher voltages and currents, making scaling difficult and limiting power density.

In contrast, Vertical GaN® (GaN-on-GaN) architecture utilizes a 3D structure where current flows vertically through the bulk material.

  • High-Frequency Operation: By leveraging a high-density vertical JFET structure, the device achieves high bulk material mobility and a lower on-resistance ($R_{DS(on)}$). This enables switching frequencies at or above 1 MHz, vastly outperforming traditional silicon switch speeds.
  • Miniaturization: Because switching frequency is inversely proportional to the size of passive components (like inductors and capacitors), operating in the megahertz range allows the driver to use significantly smaller internal magnetics. This results in an ultra-compact form factor ($2.09 \times 1.26 \times 1.0 \text{ inches}$) and a power density of $7.6 \text{ W/in}^3$—roughly twice the industry average.
  • Thermal & Robustness Advantages: Vertical GaN features a superior temperature coefficient compared to lateral structures and provides robust, patented avalanche capability, meaning it can survive voltage spikes that would typically destroy standard lateral HEMTs.

Performance Specifications

The driver operates on a universal input voltage range (108 V – 305 V at 50/60 Hz) and outputs a programmable constant current ranging from 100 mA to 710 mA over a 28 V to 42 V window.

The module incorporates advanced digital control via a dedicated powertrain engine (such as the Merlin Power Engine), combining power factor correction, low total harmonic distortion ($\text{THD} < 20\%$), and highly precise dimming circuitry into a single integrated architecture. The 0-10V analog-to-digital dimming interface is engineered for high light quality, satisfying strict flicker-free criteria down to a 1% threshold before utilizing a distinct dim-to-off capability.

Sourcing Statement

Sourcing components based on highly specialized, proprietary semiconductor topologies requires direct engagement with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or their authorized vertical market distributors.

Because NexGen Power Systems utilizes a proprietary, vertically integrated fabrication model for its Vertical GaN® products, the Helios™ NL020SD is generally sourced through the following channels:

  • Direct Manufacturer Engagement: For high-volume architectural, commercial, or horticultural lighting production runs, sourcing is typically initiated via NexGen Power Systems’ factory sales or specialized applications engineering teams. This allows engineering teams to secure production-ready component samples, request custom firmware programming for the constant current profiles, and negotiate tiered volume pricing.
  • Specialized Power Electronics Distributors: If the device has been allocated to broad market distribution channels, it is found through technical distributors specializing in wide-bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor solutions and advanced lighting components rather than general consumer electronics retailers.

For initial evaluation and engineering design phases, a formal Device Sample Request should be submitted directly through NexGen’s corporate platform or an authorized regional field application engineer (FAE) to verify current lead times and batch availability.
